DSMF Safer Choices

During Year 10 pupils will be receiving drugs awareness lessons as part of the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation schools programme, Safer Choices. As you may know, we set up the Foundation after our son Dan’s untimely and unnecessary death in January last year. Dan made the fatal decision to go along with a group who were taking Ecstasy. He died two days later from multiple organ failure. He was just 16. We realised if this could happen to Dan, it could happen to just about any young person out there, and we wanted to do anything we could to prevent other families experiencing what we had.

Safer Choices has been developed with joint input from a Midlands-based drugs training company and experienced teachers, from schools and adult education, with the aim of equipping young people to make safer choices about drugs. A key part of our original vision was equipping parents to support their children as well as they possibly can around drugs. We want you as parents/carers to be aware of what your children will be learning, and to have the opportunity to fill any gaps in knowledge you may have yourselves. Please take a couple of minutes to watch an introductory message from us.

Below is an overview of what your child will be learning each week:

Week 1 - Introduction and what Drugs are

Week 2 - Why take Drugs?

Week 3 - Impact and Dan's Story

Week 4 - Peer Pressure

Week 5 - Harm Reduction

Week 6 - Changing Minds
