Welcome to the History Department

The Department is situated in a suite of rooms in the main section of the school. We are staffed by a strong team of historians, each with their own specialism.

  • Ms C Wilkinson (Head of Department)
  • Mr N Gaisford
  • Ms M Porter
  • Mrs S Blackburn

At Key Stage 3, we follow the Department of Education guidelines in terms of subject content. In Year 7 we study Anglo-Saxon Britain, the Norman Conquest and Medieval England; in Year 8, we study the Tudors, the Stuarts and the Black History; and in Year 9 we study the Industrial Revolution, 1750-1900 and consider change and continuity in the Twentieth Century. We organise 2 trips, the year 7s visit Rochester Castle in November and the Year 9s visit the trenches at Ypres, Belgium in June.

At GCSE, we follow the AQA Modern World B Specification. This encompasses International Relations between the wars, the causes of World War II and the Origins of the Cold War. Depth studies include the Roaring Twenties in the USA and the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. We study British History as part of our Historical Enquiry unit. Pupils develop skills in extended writing and source manipulation, as well as abundant historical knowledge. We run a residential trip to Berlin every February for GCSE students.

At A Level, we use the OCR specification. In Year 12 we look at two different time periods. The first unit considers the American Revolution 1740-1796. The second unit covers England 1547-1603: The Later Tudors. In Year 13, we cover a coursework unit on a topic of your own choice, and an examined unit which looks Russia and its Rulers 1855-1964. We have a programme of study visits to the National Archives, Hampton Court and from 2016 a residential trip to Washington and New York.

Welcome to Government and Politics

This A Level subject is taught by Ms C Wilkinson and Mr N Gaisford, experienced teachers of Politics (as well as History!). We follow the Edexcel specification covering UK and American politics.

At AS Level, we study UK Government and Politics and this encompasses topics such as Parliament, Political Parties, the Prime Minister and the Executive, the Judiciary and Elections.

At A2 Level, we study a similar course, in terms of structure, to the AS course, but this time the focus is on American politics and its federal system of government.

We make use a well-stocked library of political texts, online resources including PrechewedPolitics, including Twitter feeds, to help students stay up to date with political developments. We also send students to visit Westminster, Croydon Crown Courts, and we have attended Model United Nations conferences. As of 2016, we intend to run a residential visit to Washington and New York.
