Religious Studies

The Religious Studies Department is a successful and innovative department.

The subject is taught throughout all the Key Stages in mixed ability groups. In year 7 pupils have one RS lesson a week and are also part of a carousel where they are taught Biblical Studies alongside Art, Music and ICT which, over the year, is equivalent to one lesson a week. In year 8 pupils have one lesson of RS and one lesson of Theology a week. In year 9 pupils have one lesson of RS a week and also take Theology in a carousel with PSD. Two-thirds of the Key Stage Three curriculum is based on Christianity with the other third split between studies on Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism.

At Key Stage 4 the majority of our pupils opt for full-course GCSE RS (Edexcel), with three lessons per week. In year 10 they study Mark’s Gospel, unit 16. In year 11 they study Religion and Life based on a study of Christianity, unit 2, both modules are examined in year 11. KS4 pupils also have the opportunity to take AS Religious Studies instead of the GCSE. There is also the option to take the Welsh Board RS modules in the humanities pathway for those pupils who find GCSE challenging.

Students in the Sixth Form may study AS/A2 (Edexcel) Religious Studies, two sets follow modules in New Testament (Luke’s Gospel) and Religious Ethics. The third group study modules in Philosophy and Religious Ethics.

A special feature of the Religious Studies Department is the provision of non-examined RS Away Days.
